Emergency Preparation
Program Description
San Jose unified School District Student/parent & Employee Information Handbook August 2005, Page 20: EMERGENCY AND SAFETY PROCEDURES During school hours, if the Superintendent declares an emergency, all students and staff will be required to remain at school or an alternate safe site under the supervision of District personnel until: 1. Regular dismissal time and released only then if it is considered safe, OR 2. Released to an adult authorized by the parent or legal guardian whose name appears on District records. If students are on their way to school by bus, they will be brought to school. SITE EMERGENCY PLANS Each District site has a Site Emergency Plan. The plan is: standardized to promote coordinated efforts within the school District, practical for adapting to the capabilities of each site, flexible to meet the needs of any disaster and concise for purposes of assigning and training personnel and students with the District emergency preparedness plan. Each Principal and Site Manager is responsible for using the model site plan with an appointed Emergency Preparedness Committee chosen at each site to develop plans and procedures that can be effectively used in a sudden emergency. The Site Emergency Plans are reviewed and revised annually and appropriate drills and training are provided to help all persons become familiar with their responsibilities. Emergency preparedness also includes close cooperation and planning with police, fire, civic emergency agencies and school/parent groups. Bret Harte 2005/2006 Handbook, Page 7. In preparation for emergency situations, all staff and students participate in regularly scheduled fire, earthquake, and emergency drills. Planning, training and drills are based on a comprehensive emergency plan provided by SJUSD. If you are a visitor when an emergency occurs, please report to the student assembly area. If an emergency occurs during school hours or a school activity all students are to follow the directions of school personnel. If an emergency occurs when students are not in class (passing, snack break or lunch) students will assemble with their 5th period teacher. Students will be released to authorized adults only, in an emergency situation. Please be sure your emergency information is updated regularly. Early in the 2001/2002 school year a group of parents and staff formed the Emergency Preparedness Committee with the aim of supporting our school in implementing the site emergency plan. As a committee we formally became part of the Bret Harte Community Club. There is a Red Cross emergency container at Leland to support our local community; the container is to be opened by authorized Red Cross personnel only. Our research has shown that we need to be prepared to take care of the school site for at least the first 24 hours of an emergency, but we aim to increase preparedness to cover at least 3 days. Funding has come from various sources. The community Club makes a yearly contribution and a $5.00 donation is requested from all new students each year, allowing for continuation and maintenance of our Emergency Preparedness program at Bret Harte.
