RFF (Request for Funding) recipient Crystal Robles has shared how funds from the community club have helped her and her department.
"The Bret Harte Community Club (BHCC) has been able to help me create a more engaging, rigorous, and interactive classroom for many years. A prime example is when the BHCC was able to fund an entire computer cart for the social studies department. All social studies classes now have more freedom to include technology into their lessons, and I, for one, integrate technology in my classroom at least 12 weeks each school year. This computer cart will make it easier for all social studies teachers to use tech literacy tools to help students practice 21st century skills."

“Communicating with Teens”: On Dec 5th we had the pleasure of hosting Mary Eschen from “Parenting with Logic”, speaking on best ways to communicate with our teens. Mary highlighted that the most effective communication style for parents is being a consultant, which includes showing respect, not lecturing and seizing the moment through shared games or activities. What we’re communicating in terms of confidence and helpfulness towards our kids is critical, as well as when we’re communicating, especially if emotions are high. We learned that we should set loving limits, give choices, and show empathy. The top listening improvement ideas presented: don’t lecture – have a conversation, don’t attack, show respect to your child’s opinions, keep it short and simple, and seize the moment. The presentation material can be found under http://www.parentingwithlogic.com/ under parent resource. You can also register for her free newsletter via the web site.
“The Well-Balanced Student”: On Jan 23rd we hosted Mary Hofstedt from “Challenge Success” for a fascinating discussion on “The Well-Balanced Student”. The Challenge Success team interviewed over 175,000 students and are working over 200 schools, families and communities to broaden the definition of success, and allow kids to develop the necessary skills to become resilient, ethical and motivated learners rather than just focus on grades, test scores, and performance. The key topics presented were: define success on your terms, examine subtle messages, avoid over scheduling your children’s time, limited media / screen time, honor health and well-being, model engagement and integrity, debunk the collage myths, and keep the conversation going. Tips to help your child thrive: protect playtime, downtime and family time, emphasize learning not grades, choose your words carefully, let children do their own work, prioritize sleep, create technology free spaces, and challenge the narrow definition of success. More info can be found on their web site http://www.challengesuccess.org/.

Bronco night was a huge success! The school committee did a great job with decorations. They had a huge selection of food and drinks for sale. They changed it up a bit and added games like the fishing pool in the quad. Thanks so much to all the Bret Harte staff and volunteers who helps make this a success.
