Thank You For Attending BHCC General Meeting!
A huge thank you to all those who attended the 1st Bret Harte Community Club (BHCC) general meeting on September 12, 2018!
The meeting was hosted by BHCC co-presidents Yunyun Jiang and Yael Kharman. Bret Harte Principal Alanna Callaway-Wilson and Assistant Principal of Discipline Lorena Trinidad also joined the meeting and shared their views of BHCC contributions. Bret Harte social studies teacher Crystal Robles, science teacher Jenna Patton, and science teacher Wendy Rusnak presented teachers' testimonies of how BHCC helped their teaching. Thank you all!
The meeting focused on the BHCC mission, BHCC programs, BHCC board introduction and how the entire Bret Harte community shall work together. The May 2018 General Meeting minutes and the treasurer's report were both approved in the meeting.
A big theme of the general meeting is "Get Involved". There is no better way to show our support and love to our kids than getting involved, helping accomplish things that truly make a difference in the lives of all our students. Your involvement is truly needed. We appreciate your continuous interest and support to BHCC.
Bronco Night - “A Night in Paris” was a huge success. The leadership did a great time decorating and organizing. There was a photo booth, red carpet background photo area, and chocolate fountain with other snacks. This year the school attendance was Sold Out with 400 students attending.
The Snack Shop is becoming students' favorite spot at school during break and lunch. We serve about 150-200 students Monday thru Friday. The store offers a variety of tasty treats, including Oven Baked Flaming Hot Cheetos, Lays, Doritos, Munchies, Rice Krispies, Grahams Cereal bar, Motts Fruit Snacks, water, etc. Everything is sold from $.50 to $1, and the store is fully run by a group of dedicated volunteers.
All Snac net profit goes to support BHCC for school and student activities. We currently have some money reserved to install a new water filtration system. If this project is approved by the District, the Booster Club will share half of the cost with us. In the past, Snac net profit have been used on lunch tables, classroom supplies and much more.
Everyday Heroes
On a beautiful August weekend, the water patrol in Santa Cruz was privileged to work with a group of kids and teens requiring modifications to traditional sports. Three of the water patrol supported a teenage boy on a special board, and while he typically doesn’t walk unassisted, the joy on his face and his massive fist pump inspired the audience as he charged through his very first wave... standing up!
Many people never realize the impact that they make with kind words or giving gestures. We will be on the quad Tuesday September 25 to hear what students have to say about their peer interactions that have a profound and positive effect. At our table, students will recognize and thank other students for upholding the principles of HR2 (Honesty, Respect, Responsibility). The September theme is “Honesty,” so examples used to nominate students as “Everyday Heroes” should fall under this category. We will be back the third Tuesday in October looking for nominations related to “Respect.”
Staff Appreciation Luncheon (August)
A staff appreciation lunch was hosted by BHCC in August for the teachers and staff of Bret Harte , catered by California Pizza Kitchen. This was as a "Welcome Back" lunch for about 70 - 75 teachers and staff attended it and was much liked by them.
In future, we would like to ask the BHCC community of parent volunteers to participate by providing some desserts and show your appreciation to the teachers. We would also appreciate help in cleaning the place, after the event and shall reach out to them as the next lunch dates approaches. The future timelines are October, February and May. Our next luncheon will be hosted on Oct 24. Click here to sign up!

Request for Funding (RFF)
RFF is short for "Request for Funding". This BHCC program helps bridge the gap between the limited stipend provided by the district and what our teachers and staff need, such as microphones, projectors, etc. RFF is our largest expense, approximately $36K. Last year, our RFF purchases included 2 sets of classroom ChromeBook carts (total qty 72 laptops!) and many items for classrooms and school wide use. Staff member Tony Purtscher has shared his experience of RFF program:
"Hello, Last year I received a really nice set of speakers which allowed students to hear the videos I use. Prior to receiving them I had a pair of speakers that was really insufficient and left many students struggling to hear. I also received a system of buzzers that allow me to set up game show like lessons and get students to learn by playing a “game”. It has been really helpful, and really fun! I am so grateful to RFF for the support and look forward to the things I may be able to use in the future!'
The Community Club Donation Drive is in full swing and we need your support! We have only reached 13% school-wide participation and are still quite short of reaching our $50000 goal. The Community Club supports our students and staff by providing staff lunches, equipment, and supplies for classrooms, student dances, student recognition, anti-bullying programs and many, many more. Please donate the requested $250 per student or any amount you are able to contribute by downloading the form here or contribute using PayPal via the link found on the Bret Harte website.
Staff Appreciation Luncheon, Wednesday, October 24th
Please help us show our appreciation to Bret Harte teachers and staff for all they do to support our children! We need your help to make this luncheon a success by donating the items or volunteering to help on the day of the event. Please signup via the link here.
